The Little Girl that Lost a Finger…
This poem takes us on a ride, one thing takes us to the next. Just looking at the poem you know it goes from one thing to another since in the first paragraph each line starts with and. You don’t know how far the ride is going to take you.
I don’t think the poem is about a missing finger, I think it’s about how one thing leads to another, no matter how big or how small. In the ocean a small fish gets eaten by a bigger fish, and that fish gets eaten and on and on. Life is like a food chain, one thing leads to another. Everything effect’s everything else, nothing stands alone.
The first part of the poem sets up the story, one thing started a chain reaction. Then the poem takes a different direction. Instead of telling a story it demands action. They want a boat, and a captain, and to give the captain payment, it even said what the captain should ask for. He should ask for the best city in the world. But it won’t be the best city any more if it has a girl in it who is missing a finger. So they have to find the finger.
We go back to the beginning, we make a fully circle. The finger is lost in the sea, so we have to go to the sea to get it back, so we can make things right again.

When I first read the poem I had a completely different view on it but now that I read your reflection, I can see how your ideas match better than mine do, so it makes me agree with you.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that it takes us from one place to another in one sentences shows an adventure ahead.
